[19/ January/2025]
Abuja-Saba:
The Republic of Nigeria announced, on Saturday, its joining of BRICS as a partner country.

The Nigerian Foreign Ministry said in a statement: The Nigerian government "accepted the invitation to join BRICS as a partner country" .. considering that this step confirms Nigeria's commitment to strengthening international cooperation and strategic partnerships.

The statement added: "BRICS, as a group of major emerging economies, provides a unique platform for Nigeria to enhance trade, investment, and social and economic cooperation with member states."

The statement indicated that Nigeria is preparing to benefit from this platform to advance common goals in trade, investment, energy security, infrastructure development, technology, and climate change.

According to the same source, the partnership with BRICS is in line with Nigeria’s national aspirations for inclusive growth, regional integration and effective participation in shaping a “just and equitable global economic order.”

BRICS is an international group of five countries: Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa and India. It has played an active role in recent years, competing with Western economies, especially the United States of America. In the past two years, it has made significant progress in terms of the number of members, the establishment of a group-specific investment bank and a unified currency.
