Israeli media: Halevi leaves army mired in deep crisis to his successor

Occupied Quds - Saba:

The Israeli army is suffering from severe tensions in the leadership and the departure of many officers without a replacement, Haaretz said on on Wednesday, after 15 months of war, as Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi will leave his successor an army mired in a deep crisis.

Halevi and the commander of the Southern Command Yaron Finkelman announced their resignation on Tuesday, the Zionist paper added, but Halevi said "I will carry the failure with me for the rest of my life."

According to the paper, Minister of War Yisrael Katz made the Chief of Staff miserable until he resigned, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will try to repeat the move with the head of the Shabak Ronen Bar, expecting the resignation of more officers.

The beginning of reform lies in forming an official commission of inquiry to independently investigate the causes of the failure and the war, the paper said, noting that Netanyahu is working to prevent such a move.

Regarding the military operation launched by Israel yesterday in Jenin under the name "Iron Wall", Haaretz saw that "the similarity of the name to "Defensive Shield" (a military operation launched by Israel in March 2002 aimed at eliminating the Second Intifada) was intended by Netanyahu to deceive the public.

It indicated that Netanyahu wants to present a reward to Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

The paper stated that the real threat to the continued implementation of the prisoner deal may come from the West Bank in light of these moves, and due to the risk of demonstrative attacks by Jewish settlers that will lead to more revenge attacks from the Palestinian side.

Earlier, Zionist media indicated that there are three candidates to succeed Halevi: Director General of the Ministry of Defense, Major General (res.) Eyal Zamir, who lost the position to Halevi in the previous race.

The other two are former Deputy Chief of Staff Amir Baram, who was also a partner in the military failure on October 7, 2023, and Northern Command Commander Uri Gordin.
