Greenland amends real estate purchase law
[04/ February/2025]
New York -Saba:
Greenland authorities said on Tuesday that buying real estate on the island is only possible for people with Danish citizenship or permanent residents of the country, due to Donald Trump's covetousness.

Trump announced on January 7, before taking office, that Greenland should become part of the United States, emphasizing its strategic importance to national security and protecting the "free world," including from China and Russia.

Greenland's prime minister, MĂște Egede, has stated that the island is not for sale and will never be sold. However, Trump refused to promise not to use military force to take control of the island.

The Greenlandic government's Minister of Housing and Infrastructure stated that such a measure could be applied, among other reasons, to avoid buying real estate for speculative purposes.

On Monday, the newspaper quoted a document stating that Greenland authorities will consider a bill to tighten rules on donations to political parties, which could prohibit parties from receiving anonymous and foreign donations, to protect elections from foreign interference and preserve the island's political integrity under Trump's demands.

At the end of 2024, Trump described US ownership of Greenland as an "absolute necessity," commenting on his decision to appoint former US ambassador to Sweden and businessman Ken Haury as the new US ambassador to Denmark.

Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953, and is still part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but was granted self-government in 2009 with the ability to manage its internal affairs independently. In 2019, a series of media reports emerged that Trump was considering the possibility of buying Greenland.
