An American newspaper quoted US President Donald Trump as saying that he spoke by phone with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in an attempt to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
According to the American newspaper, Trump said from the presidential plane on Friday, when asked about the number of times the two leaders had spoken: "I'd rather not say that."
Trump expressed his belief that the Russian president "cares" about the killings taking place on the battlefield, and said: "He wants people to stop dying, all these young dead."
Trump told the newspaper that the three-year war "would never have happened" if he had been president in 2022.
He added: "I have always had a good relationship with Putin," unlike his predecessor (Biden).
"Biden has been an embarrassment to our nation, a total embarrassment," stressing that he has a concrete plan "to end the war."
Trump on Saturday said he does not rule out the possibility of holding a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that they have always had "good relations," according to him.
Trump told reporters, in response to a question about the possibility of holding a summit meeting with the Russian president: "It is possible, it is possible."
Trump added that he and President Putin "have always had a good relationship," and that he is "sad" about what is happening in Ukraine.
