Danes launched on Monday a campaign to "annex the state of California to Denmark," in response to US President Donald Trump's aspirations to acquire the island of Greenland and annex it to the United States.
A Danish website called "Denmarkification," which means "making something Danish," said in a statement that the campaign aims to buy the state of California from the United States and turn it into Danish land, in response to Trump's plan to buy Greenland.
The campaign organizer, Xavier Dutoit, told Politico: The project would cost California a trillion dollars and a "lifetime supply of Danish pastries" that "Hollywood would pay for." His proposal has already garnered the support of nearly 200,000 people.
As for why they chose California over other states, the campaign website stated that California was chosen for its warm and sunny climate, the development of technology, its avocado production, and its embrace of the Disneyland theme park.
US President Donald Trump had previously contacted Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen about the issue of buying Greenland, as Greenland is one of the two autonomous regions in the Kingdom of Denmark, along with the Faroe Islands, located 2,900 kilometers from Denmark.
However, the Danish Prime Minister emphasized that the island is not for sale, which was also confirmed by the Danish Foreign Minister.
