Khartoum - Saba:
20 people, including a senior officer, were killed in a military plane crash near Wadi Saydna Air Base in Omdurman, northwest of the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
According to Russia Today, Sudanese military sources said on Wednesday that among the dead was Major General Bahar Ahmed, one of the most prominent army leaders who led military operations in the capital Khartoum.
The Sudanese army said in a statement last night that a number of military personnel and civilians were killed in the accident, but did not provide further details.
The statement said: "One of our planes crashed while taking off from Wadi Saydna Airport yesterday evening, Tuesday, and we counted a number of dead and injured, both military and civilian. The injured were treated while firefighting teams were able to control the fire at the plane crash site in Housing District 75."
A military source in Khartoum explained that the plane crashed as a result of a "technical error," which resulted in the death of a number of officers who were on board.
The authorities announced an immediate investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident, amid initial speculation that a technical fault was behind the plane crash.
