Russia's lower house of parliament, the State Duma, on Tuesday ratified the 20-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Russia and Iran.
The treaty, which was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian on January 17, stipulates that Russia and Iran will consult and cooperate to counter military , security threats, conduct joint military exercises on their territories and abroad.
According to the Russian news agency TASS, the treaty forms the legal framework for the long-term development of relations between Moscow and Tehran, designates Russia and Iran as strategic partners, and covers all areas, including defense, counterterrorism, the energy sector, finance, transportation, industry, agriculture, culture, science and technology.
Earlier, Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin noted that the treaty will strengthen relations between the two countries in terms of bilateral cooperation and coordination on international issues.
He also explained that the document paid special attention to strengthening parliamentary relations, including within international parliamentary organizations and through the cooperation committee between the State Duma and the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran.
