Washington - (Saba):
To celebrate its 35th anniversary, the Hubble Space Telescope has released a high-resolution re-processed image of the unique Sombrero Galaxy, located about 31 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.
The galaxy is known for its unusual, flat-hat-like shape, combining the characteristics of spiral and elliptical galaxies, and features dense dust lanes surrounding it like the perimeter of a fancy hat.
Sombrero was first observed in 2003 and has become one of Hubble's most famous images. Now, the new processing reveals previously unseen details, including a web of stars and dust and a bright center housing a supermassive black hole with the mass of 9 billion suns.
Despite its brightness, the galaxy is not particularly active in star formation, producing only one star per year.
