The death toll from the massive explosion that occurred Saturday at Shahid Rajaee Port in southern Iran has risen to at least 18, with 1,139 injured, according to a new toll reported by the Iranian government spokeswoman on Sunday morning.
Iranian state television reported that the fire had been brought under control but had not yet been extinguished, with thick black smoke billowing from the area.
According to the Iranian News Agency, a spokesman for the Crisis Management Organization stated that "the cause of the explosion was the unsafe storage of chemicals inside containers."
The explosion occurred on Saturday in one of the containers at the port, the cause of which is unknown. The explosion caused material damage to one of the port buildings.
