Mayor of Deir al-Balah: Fuel shortage threatens basic services and exacerbates residents' suffering
[07/ August/2025]
Gaza – Saba:

Mayor of Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip Engineer Nizar Ayyash warned on Thursday of the repercussions of the severe fuel and diesel shortage on vital services in the city, stressing that this shortage directly threatens the lives of citizens and paralyzes the functioning of the infrastructure.

Ayyash said in a press statement carried by Palestinian media that drinking water wells are at risk of shutting down due to the depletion of the fuel needed to operate them, exposing residents to the risk of thirst and increasing health and environmental burdens, especially in light of the rising temperatures.

He pointed to a significant shortage in civil defense mechanisms, which hinders rapid response to emergencies. He also pointed to a decline in the ability to maintain sewage networks due to a shortage of equipment and fuel, which increases the likelihood of environmental crises.

Ayyash emphasized that the residents of Deir al-Balah, like other residents of the Gaza Strip, suffer from exorbitantly high prices for food and vegetables, when available, as a result of the blockade and shortages of supplies, which have exacerbated the humanitarian and living conditions.

The mayor described the fuel crisis as one of the "most prominent problems facing residents," calling on relevant authorities and humanitarian organizations to urgently intervene to provide the necessary fuel and aid to ensure the continuity of basic services and alleviate the suffering of the population.
