Health Ministry: Over 5 thousand patients with kidney failure are at death risk

SANA'A January 14. 2023 (Saba)- The Ministry of Public Health and Population has warned of a humanitarian catastrophe that threatens the lives of more than five thousand patients with renal failure, as a result of the depletion of solutions and medicines for patients with renal failure.

The Health Ministry Undersecretary for the therapeutic medicine sector, Dr. Ali Jahaf, confirmed in a press conference held in Sana'a today, Saturday, that Yemen stands today on the threshold of a real catastrophe that threatens the lives of more than five thousand patients with kidney failure, with the depletion of dialysis drugs from the ministry's stores.
In the press conference devoted to informing the public about the impact of running out of dialysis solutions and drugs in treatment centers specialized in patients with kidney failure. Jahaf said: "This is not the first conference, and we have held more than one conference, and we have been warned of a humanitarian catastrophe threatening the lives of thousands of dialysis patients in various provinces but there is no response."

He added, "We have addressed the United Nations and health organizations operating in Yemen that we need to provide sufficient drug stocks for dialysis sessions for the year 2023 AD, as we need approximately 500,000 dialysis every year without receiving a response despite many communications and meetings in this regard."

Dr. Jahf held the international community and the United Nations responsible for providing urgent dialysis sessions to save patients' lives, stressing that dialysis centers are standing today on the verge of stopping, and the stock in dialysis centers is not enough for less than two weeks.

He confirmed that there is a real human tragedy that will affect the lives of more than 5,000 patients with kidney failure who need dialysis sessions and medicines, and their lives are threatened with death if these solutions and medicines are not available urgently.

He also pointed out that the continuation of the blockade on Sana'a airport and Hodeida port exacerbated the suffering of patients and the health sector as a result of the difficulty of importing and the complicated procedures imposed by the aggression coalition, which is working to deepen the crisis of the Yemeni people and the suffering of the medical sector in Yemen.

The statement indicated that more than five thousand patients with kidney failure are threatened with inevitable death if the dialysis sessions are stopped, in addition to the suspension of more than 17 renal treatment centers at the governorate level, with two centers destroyed by direct bombardment.

It touched on the continuation of the siege and the prevention of the entry of maintenance requirements for blood dropsy devices, which number more than 498 devices, in need of maintenance, indicating that the aggression caused the suffering of patients as a result of the continued suspension of the payment of salaries.

The statement also pointed out that dialysis patients need 500,000 dialysis sessions annually, as the session price ranges from 30 to 40 dollars, not to mention the accompanying medicines and analyzes for each session, pointing out that Al-Thawra Hospital Authority receives 170 to 220 cases per day from different regions of the provinces.
