SANA'A May 11.2023 (Saba) – The Minister of Water and Environment, Eng. Abdul Raqib Al-Sharmani, met today, Thursday, with the Resident Representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Yemen, Peter James Hawkin.
The meeting, which was attended by the head of the General Authority for Rural Water Projects, Adel Saleh Badir, and the head of the Water and Environmental Sanitation Department at UNICEF, George Tabbal, discussed aspects of cooperation and coordination to support the water and sanitation sector and implement water and environmental sanitation projects in the municipality and the provinces.
During the meeting, a support plan was signed to implement projects in the water and sanitation sector at an amount of $88 million during the years 2023-2024 AD, in a way that meets the citizens' needs for water and sanitation services.
The plan includes support for the water and sanitation sector, a focus on sustainable projects, including alternative energy projects, to ensure overcoming the fuel problem and the continuation of local institutions in providing services to citizens.
He stressed the keenness to strengthen aspects of partnership with UNICEF to support water and sanitation projects during the coming period, praising UNICEF's support for the water and environmental sanitation sectors during the last phase, which contributed to the continuation of water and sanitation services.
He pointed out the importance of signing the plan to implement projects and benefit from funds to support water and environmental sanitation projects in various provinces, especially in the most deprived areas.
For his part, Hawkin affirmed UNICEF's keenness to strengthen partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment and its institutions, bodies, units, to support its efforts in expanding water and sanitation services and projects.
He pointed to the continued support of the water and environmental sanitation sectors during the next phase to alleviate the suffering of Yemenis and address the problems facing this sector.
