ABUJA July 31. 2023 (Saba) - Authorities in a northeastern state of Nigeria has imposed a curfew after widespread looting of shops and public food stores.
Displaced youths began looting, but soon they were joined by hundreds of residents who stormed public food stores, especially grain to loot them.
The French Press Agency quoted Adamawa state governor Ahmadu Amr Fentiri, as saying that a 24-hour curfew had been imposed with immediate effect.
The local police also announced the deployment of personnel to enforce the curfew to prevent the looting.
Nigeria is the largest country by population in Africa and the largest economy on the continent, but it has been facing a serious economic crisis since 2016, and about half of Nigeria's 215 million people live in extreme poverty (less than two dollars a day) despite the huge oil reserves.
