SANA'A January 08. 2024 (Saba) - Yemen and other Arab countries on 8 January celebrate the Arab day for illiteracy eradication and adult literacy, as illiteracy rates are in the rise in a country that experiences persistent aggression and siege.
This day is a significant station to evaluate efforts exerted to eradicate illiteracy during last year, head of literacy bureau told Saba, by reviewing and improving the bureau's plans, programs and activities.
Yemen sees one of the World's highest rates of illiteracy, Ahmed al-Kibsi added, blaming the "persistent aggression that targeted schools and educational institutions.. leading to high rates of dropouts that exceeded 350,000 children (aging 6 to 10 years)."
According to official figures by the Central Organization of Statistics, nearly 6.4 million 10-18-year-old Yemeni children are illiterate, making illiteracy one of the greatest challenges to the country's development.
Throughout one year, the bureau secured 79,450 jobs for illiterates, Kibsi added, noting that ex-illiterates were also absorbed in order to prevent their retreat to illiteracy in the future, and that 399 literacy centers were opened.
