BRIDGETOWN July 02. 2024 (Saba) - The US National Hurricane Center warned that Hurricane Beryl had intensified as it advanced in the Caribbean to become a “potentially catastrophic” Category 5 hurricane.
The center said in a bulletin at (03:00 GMT on Tuesday) that “Beryl has now become a potentially catastrophic hurricane of the fifth category,” explaining that “fluctuations in strength are possible... but it is expected that Beryl will remain close to the strength of a hurricane.” Huge as it advances through the Caribbean towards Jamaica.
The center explained that Beryl is advancing, accompanied by winds reaching a maximum speed of 160 miles (260 kilometers) per hour.
Beryl thus becomes the largest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic hurricane season ever.
According to the center, the island of Carriacou in Grenada was subjected to a direct hit from the “extremely dangerous eye wall” of the hurricane, with sustained winds exceeding 150 miles per hour.
In turn, nearby islands, including St. Vincent and the Grenadines, experienced catastrophic winds and life-threatening storm surge,” according to the National Hurricane Center.
