[Sat, 05 Jul 2025 20:39:14 +0300]

Tokyo – Saba:
A 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern Japan on Saturday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

In a statement, the JMA reported that the quake's epicenter was at a depth of 19 kilometers in the waters near Akusekijima, one of the Tokara Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture.

Ayataka Abeita, director of the JMA’s Earthquake and Tsunami Monitoring Division, stated during a press conference in Tokyo that the tremor occurred amid a series of seismic activities and was not unusual.

Since June 21, the Tokara Islands have experienced over 1,300 noticeable earthquakes, including several measuring up to magnitude 4 today.

Japan, located at the intersection of four tectonic plates, is highly prone to seismic activity and is home to around 100 active volcanoes.
