CARACAS July 28. 2024 (Saba) - Voting began on Sunday in the Venezuelan presidential election, with long lines forming outside polling stations in the capital Caracas before they opened.
Agence France-Presse reported that about 21 million voters out of 30 million Venezuelans were called to cast their ballots.
Ten candidates are running in the race, but the competition is narrowed down to President Nicolas Maduro (61 years old), who is running for a third six-year term, and former diplomat Gonzalez Urrutia (74 years old), who surprisingly replaced opposition leader Maria Corina Machado when the authorities declared her ineligible to run.
