LISBON - (Saba): Forest fires in Portugal have devoured about 135 thousand hectares in just one week, bringing the burned area in Portugal this year to nearly 147 thousand hectares, the third largest area in a decade.
The European Copernicus Observatory reported in a statement today, Sunday, that the Viseu do Lafuenchal region is the most affected by fires in recent days, after more than 52,000 hectares burned, followed by the Tâmega and Sousa region (more than 25,000 hectares), and the Aveiro region (more than 24,000 hectares).
Portugal has lost around 146,649 hectares to fires this year, moving in one week from the best burned area in a decade to the third worst burned area since 2014. Portugal has recorded 170 fires this year.
