NAYPIDAW - SABA: The ruling military junta in Burma has declared that the death toll from Cyclone Yagi and the resultant flooding has increased to 390, with many still missing.

Yagi hit northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Burma more than a week ago, causing flooding and landslides that killed hundreds.

The catastrophe has exacerbated the security, humanitarian and political crisis that Burma has been experiencing since the 2021 coup that toppled Aung San Suu Kyi's democratically elected government.

The United Nations said nearly a million people had been affected in Burma in the wake of Cyclone Yagi.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said massive destruction had been inflicted in those areas, with roads, bridges, communication networks, schools, public service facilities, religious sites, crops and farmland severely damaged or completely collapsed.
