Russian geophysicist Nikolai Balchin confirmed that during the last 100 years, the compass needle began to show a direction closer to true north due to the movement of the North Magnetic Pole towards the geographic pole.
“At the beginning of the 20th century, the compass needle was pointing to the magnetic pole, which differed from the true pole by several degrees, but this difference is now less,” Balchin, a leading researcher at the Russian Institute of Oceanography, told RIA Novosti on Sunday. At the moment, the North Pole is very close to the geographic pole. It's much closer than it was 100 years ago.”
The expert emphasized that it is impossible to predict the movement of the poles, because the main magnetic field is caused by complex processes in the Earth's inner core, about which little is known so far.
The Russian scientist noted that the movement of the magnetic poles has no effect on everyday life, since the magnetic field is now practically not used for navigation, and specialists, if necessary, use a digital model of the Earth's main magnetic field, which is updated every five years.
