Beijing - Saba:
The Chinese Ministry of Defense on Monday condemned US arms sales to Taiwan.
Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said in a statement that the Taiwan issue is the first red line that must not be crossed in Sino-US relations, stressing that arms sales to Taiwan seriously violate the one-China principle and China-US joint statements, which are the political foundations of relations between the two countries.
The Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman criticized the United States for violating its political commitment not to support so-called "Taiwan independence" and pushing Taiwan towards the danger of war.
"We urge the U.S. side to immediately stop providing military aid , arms sales to Taiwan and sever its military ties with Taiwan," he said.
On Saturday, the White House announced $571.3 million in military aid to the Taiwan region, and on the same day, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that the State Department had approved $295 million in arms sales to Taiwan.
