Washington - Saba:
Authorities in several US states, including Kentucky, Virginia and Missouri, have declared a state of emergency following a severe winter storm that hit the eastern United States on Monday.
The US National Weather Service expected in a statement that the storm's effects would include heavy snowfall and polar winds that would disrupt transportation and travel.
The agency explained that the storm's path would affect more than 60 million people, with snow accumulating to levels that could reach 61 centimeters in some areas such as New York and Pennsylvania. It also warned that roads would become unsafe due to the accumulation of ice and snow.
The storm disrupted air traffic, as work at Kansas City International Airport was briefly halted due to the rapid accumulation of ice, before operations resumed after the snow was removed.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the storm could cause widespread power outages, posing significant challenges for residents amid the freezing temperatures, and urged residents to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel.
The storm is expected to continue through tomorrow, with heavy snowfall and strong winds that could reach more than 40 mph, compounding the storm’s impact on affected areas.
