The Seismic Monitoring Department of the General Authority for Meteorology on Thursday said the country recorded (539) earthquakes in 2024.
The Iraqi "Al-Maalouma" Agency quoted the department, in a report, as saying: "The total number of earthquakes recorded in the Iraqi seismic monitoring network during the year 2024 amounted to (539) earthquakes, ranging in magnitude between (1 to 6.2) degrees, while their focal depths ranged between (3 to 46) km."
It added: "The number of seismic events inside Iraq reached (231) earthquakes and their number outside Iraq reached (308), with (170) earthquakes inside Iran and near its borders with Iraq, while (116) earthquakes were recorded in Turkey, (11) earthquakes in Syria, (six) earthquakes in Kuwait, (four) earthquakes in Saudi Arabia, and one earthquake in the Arabian Gulf."
"The activity was clearly concentrated in the northern and northeastern regions, specifically near the Iraqi-Iranian border strip in the areas of south and southeast Darbandikhan, east of Kalar/Sulaymaniyah, Khanaqin, Mandali/Diyala, Badra District/Wasit, Nineveh, Kirkuk, Dohuk and Erbil, with earthquakes recorded in areas close to and adjacent to Iraq, including Turkey, Iran and Syria, with varying strength from one region to another."
It added that "Sulaymaniyah Governorate topped the list with the largest number of seismic events in 2024, reaching (73) tremors, followed by Nineveh Governorate with (34) tremors, followed by Dohuk Governorate with (30) tremors, then Erbil Governorate with (25) tremors, while Diyala Governorate (24) tremors, followed by Kirkuk Governorate (19) tremors, Salah al-Din Governorate (seven) tremors, then Basra Governorate (five) tremors and (four) tremors for each of Maysan and Wasit Governorates, Anbar Governorate (three) tremors, Muthanna Governorate two tremors and finally Babylon Governorate with only one tremor.
"The number of reports issued on the immediate tremors reached (51) reports. Most of these earthquakes were felt by citizens living near the sites of these tremors, and no human or material losses were recorded as a result of the seismic activity."
