Sydney - Saba:
St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney announced on Wednesday that the world's first patient fitted with a fully artificial heart has been discharged from the hospital after a successful surgery.
The patient, a man in his forties, suffered from severe heart failure and lived with a titanium artificial heart pump for more than 100 days before receiving a heart transplant in March. He was fitted with the artificial heart in Australia as a temporary measure while waiting for a donor heart.
The patient, who left the hospital in February, set a record for the longest lifespan with an artificial heart. The hospital hopes that the technology will enable patients to live with the device without the need for a real heart transplant in the future.
