Ottawa - Saba:
Canadian researchers have discovered "lariocidin," a completely new antibiotic that hasn't been discovered for three decades and could help combat drug-resistant bacteria.
The molecule was isolated from bacteria living in the soil of a home garden and has a unique mechanism of action that attacks bacteria differently from current antibiotics, making it effective against resistant strains.
After successful initial tests, the team is now working to develop it for human use. This discovery comes at a critical time, as antibiotic resistance poses a growing threat to public health.
