Berlin - Saba:
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck called on the European Union to provide a strong response to the new tariffs announced by the United States on imported cars.
German media reported on Thursday that Habeck said, "It is important that the European Union provide a decisive response to these tariffs, and it must be clear that we will not back down in the face of American pressure." He added that this move "was not a surprise" and that the European Commission had been preparing for such a scenario.
The German minister indicated that his country would continue to support the European Commission in its negotiations with the US to find a solution that prevents the escalation of a trade war between the two sides.
He warned that these tariffs would cause significant harm to all parties, saying, "This is bad news for German manufacturers, for the German economy, for the European Union, but also for the United States itself."
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday the imposition of 25% tariffs on imported cars and light trucks, effective next week (April 2, 2025).
