WASHINGTON April 25, 2024 (Saba) - US police arrested dozens of demonstrators in solidarity with Palestine on the Austin campus after hundreds of students walked out of classrooms and began a sit-in in support of Gaza.
Videos on social media showed several state police officers, wearing riot gear, trying to disperse the crowd.
Four students have been arrested so far, and more could follow if the crowds don't leave, the Texas Tribune reported.
Police were carrying batons and guns, and some used batons to push people away, the Dallas Morning News reported.
The university prepared for the protests that began at midday on Wednesday, according to the newspaper, with the Office of Student Affairs sending a statement warning students that there would be consequences for participating in the event.
Last week there were demonstrations at several elite institutions, with demonstrators setting up camps on university property.
Several universities threatened to suspend participating students, and more than 100 activists were arrested at Columbia University.
