UNMAS : Volume of rubble in Gaza is estimated at 37 million tons & it takes 14 years to remove it
[27/April/2024]

GAZA April 27. 2024 (Saba) - The United Nations estimated the volume of rubble and rubble to be removed in the Gaza Strip at about 37 million tons, as the intensive Zionist aggression and destruction of buildings continued since October 7, 2023.

Russia Today quoted UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) official Per Ludhammar as saying during a regular UN press briefing in Geneva, "We estimated that there were 37 million tons of rubble, or about 300 kilograms of rubble per square meter in the Gaza Strip, which before the war was densely populated and urban."

Ludhammar pointed out that "removing them will take 14 years" assuming the use of about a hundred trucks, and stressed that unexploded ordnance mixed with rubble, which will greatly complicate the task, expressing that "at least 10 percent" of the munitions released in the conflict do not explode, and therefore pose a constant threat to the population, to the teams responsible for searching the rubble to recover the bodies of the victims and to the workers assigned to remove the rubble.

Ludhammar spoke of a recent meeting in Amman with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and NGOs to discuss how best to deal with this rubble mixed with explosives, "in preparation for what may happen and to intervene in Gaza."

The official's statement stems from his experience in this field, as he previously took on the same mission in Iraq, "but on a smaller scale," and explained that "65% of the destroyed buildings are residential" in the Gaza Strip.

Paul O'Brien, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, confirmed that Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza using US munitions.

O'Brien pointed out that Amnesty International's research confirms that the Zionist enemy army has committed war crimes against Palestinians.

"For this reason, we call on the US to stop sending weapons with which war crimes are committed," said Amnesty International's Executive Director.

Since the seventh of October 2023, the Zionist enemy has been waging a brutal and destructive aggression on Gaza, leaving tens of thousands of martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women.
