NIAMEY March 29. 2024 (Saba) - The Ministry of the Interior in Niger has revealed that the United States will soon present a “draft” regarding “withdrawal arrangements” for its forces deployed in Niger after Niamey canceled the cooperation agreement with Washington.
The ministry indicated in a statement that US Ambassador Kathleen FitzGibbon announced the move during a meeting on Wednesday with Nigerian Minister of Interior General Mohamed Toumba
According to the same source, the American diplomat announced that “her country will return with a project” related to “arrangements for the withdrawal of American forces from Nigerien territory,” which number slightly more than a thousand soldiers. No date was mentioned.
The ministry added that Fitzgibbon explained that the United States “took note of the decision” by Niger to cancel the military agreement and that the withdrawal project “will be discussed” between the two parties.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller did not want to comment on the Nigerien statement, stressing that the situation of American forces in Niger remains “generally” unchanged at the present time.
