Columbia University President Resigns Over Pro-Palestine Protests
[Thu, 15 Aug 2024 12:54:10 +0300]

WASHINGTON August 15. 2024 (Saba) - Columbia University President Nemat "Minouche" Shafik resigned from her position on Thursday, following student protests that erupted on the university campus in New York last April in supporting occupied Palestine and Gaza Strip, she confirmed in a statement.

The resignation of Columbia University President, known as Manoush Shafik, comes a year after her appointment to the position, and after she was widely criticized in recent months for her handling student protests denouncing the extermination Zionist war on Gaza Strip.

In November, the university suspended the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) groups for organizing “unauthorized protests.”

In March, the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) and the Palestine Legal Action Group filed a lawsuit against the university over the targeting and punishment of the two student groups during the protests.

In April, Shafik cracked down on pro-Palestine protests on campus, calling in the New York City Police Department, which made hundreds of arrests.

In protest of the university president’s decision to arrest students participating in the pro-Palestine protest, hundreds of Columbia faculty members organized a mass strike.

This was followed by an expansion of student protests in support of Palestine, to include other universities across the United States, and was met with violence from the American police as well.
