GENEVA August 24. 2024 (Saba) - The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed grave concern over the confirmation of polio infection of an infant in Deir al-Balah, Gaza, the first case in Gaza in 25 years.
WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in a press statement on Saturday that the Organization and its partners worked urgently to collect samples from the child and transfer them to a laboratory accredited by the organization in the region, where genetic sequencing confirmed a virus linked to the type II poliovirus variant that was detected in sewage samples in Gaza last June.
Tedros stated that the ten-month-old infant was paralyzed in the lower part of the left leg and is currently in stable condition, noting that due to the high risk of spreading poliovirus in Gaza and the region, the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and UNICEF are working to implement two rounds of vaccination against polio in the coming weeks, to stop the transmission of infection.
