The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) emphasized on Monday that the humanitarian operation in Gaza has become impossible.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said in a press statement: “The humanitarian operation has become impossible in Gaza due to the ongoing blockade and obstacles by the occupation authorities.”
On Sunday, Lazzarini announced the suspension of the delivery of aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing, which is the main outlet for humanitarian aid to Gaza, due to its theft by “armed” gangs, explaining that the route through this crossing has not been safe for months.
In a press conference, he said: “On Nov. 16, a large convoy of aid trucks was stolen by armed gangs,” he said, adding: “Yesterday, we tried to bring in a number of food trucks through the same route. They were all seized.”
He noted that the difficult decision comes at a time when hunger is rapidly worsening, continuing: “The delivery of humanitarian aid should never be risky or turn into suffering.”
“In Gaza, the humanitarian operation has become unnecessarily impossible due to: The ongoing blockade, obstacles from the Israeli authorities, political decisions restricting the quantities of aid, insecurity on aid routes, and the targeting of local police. All of the above has led to a breakdown in public order.”
