The Lebanese presidency announced on Monday the assignment of Judge Nawaf Salam to form the new Lebanese government with a majority of 84 deputies out of 128 at the conclusion of the binding parliamentary consultations conducted by President General Joseph Aoun.
A statement issued by the Lebanese presidency at the conclusion of the binding parliamentary consultations conducted by President Aoun in two stages before and after this afternoon and concluded by officially informing Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri of the outcome of the consultations, stated that Salam won the votes of 84 deputies, while caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati won nine votes, while no one was named, 35 deputies.
The statement added that President Aoun summoned Nawaf Salam to assign him, noting that he is outside the country and is scheduled to return tomorrow.
It is worth noting that Nawaf Salam is an academic and diplomatic figure with a rich career in serving Lebanon on the international scene.
Nawaf Salam held several senior positions at the United Nations, where he was Lebanon’s ambassador and representative to the United Nations for ten years between 2007 and 2017, during which time he represented Lebanon in the Security Council during its non-permanent membership in 2010 and 2011.
