Melbourne - Saba:
Italy’s Jannik Sinner, currently ranked world number one, has qualified for the Australian Open final after a dominant 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 victory over American Ben Shelton in Friday's semi-final.
Sinner, the defending champion, extended his winning streak to 20 matches, the longest of his career, with this victory. His last defeat came in the final of the Beijing tournament in October 2024, where he lost to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
The Italian now aims to retain his Australian Open title, which he won in the previous year by defeating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling five-set match.
Sinner will face Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final, who qualified after Serbian Novak Djokovic withdrew from the tournament due to injury.
Zverev is aiming for his first Grand Slam title, having previously reached the finals at the 2020 US Open and 2024 Roland Garros, but coming up short in both.
If Sinner wins, he will become the first Italian player to claim three major titles. The final is set for Sunday, January 26.
