Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today, Tuesday, that he had a "good" call with US President Donald Trump, to discuss the issue of tariffs.
According to what the Canadian Prime Minister announced, the two leaders agreed to suspend the implementation of new tariffs on Canada for 30 days, while the two countries work on a plan to combat cross-border crime.
Trudeau said in a post on the "X" platform: "I just had a good call with President Trump. The proposed tariffs will be suspended for at least 30 days."
He added that Canada will begin implementing a $1.3 billion border plan, which includes reinforcing the border with helicopters and new technologies. Canada will also deploy nearly ten thousand security personnel to protect the border, he said.
The Canadian prime minister also revealed that the Canadian government has pledged to appoint a special agent to combat fentanyl trafficking, in addition to allocating $200 million to create a joint force to combat cartels and organized crime.
Previously, Trump signed executive orders imposing tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China.
Trump later announced a month-long exemption from tariffs on Mexico, after it agreed to send 10,000 troops to the southern border of the United States to combat drug trafficking and the flow of illegal immigrants.
