Activists: Four-meter-long great white shark spotted off Tunisia coast

Tunis - Saba:
Activists on social media in Tunisia have widely circulated a video documenting the appearance of a great white shark off the coast of Gammarth, a northern suburb of the capital, Tunis.

One activist said in a video he posted on Tuesday evening that the shark was about to eat the carcass of a dolphin, as the video showed two great white sharks.

This is not the first time a great white shark has been spotted off the coast of Tunisia. In January 2025, amateur sailors were surprised by the appearance of this giant fish near their boat, four miles off the coast of Mahres, in the eastern governorate of Sfax.

Marine science researcher Samira Al-Najjar confirmed in a previous statement to Radio Mosaique that this species of shark is not hostile to humans, and that the rumors about it feeding on human flesh are unfounded.

The researcher confirmed that the shark is found in its normal marine environment and is threatened with extinction due to small-scale bycatch and marine pollution.
She said that the great white shark is a slow-growing shark, requiring between 10 and 15 years for its ability to reproduce. Its fertility rate is also very low.

The specialist explained at the time that sharks are at the top of the food chain, and that their extinction would collapse the entire food chain, thus further deteriorating the ecological balance necessary for its preservation.

She pointed out that several species of sharks are found in Tunisian waters, the most famous of which is the gray shark, which does not exceed 2.5 meters in length. Its fishing season is in the summer.
