New York - Saba:
The UN Security Council on Friday condemned the violence committed in the Latakia and Tartus governorates on the Syrian coast, including the mass killings of civilians, calling on the so-called "transitional authorities" to protect all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliation.
In a statement, the Council said: "The Security Council strongly condemns the widespread violence that has been taking place in the Latakia and Tartous governorates of Syria since 6 March, including the mass killings of civilians, particularly from the Alawite community, and the attacks on civilian infrastructure, including hospitals." It expressed its "grave concern that this violence is leading to increased inter-communal tensions in Syria," and called on "all parties to immediately cease all acts of violence and incitement and ensure the protection of all civilians and humanitarian infrastructure."
The Security Council also called in its statement for "additional international support for the efforts of the United Nations and humanitarian organizations to intensify the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in need throughout Syria. It called on the so-called 'transitional authorities' to protect all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliation."
On Friday, the members of the UN Security Council agreed to condemn the current violence in Syria after voting in favor of a presidential statement.
