Seoul - Saba:
The South Korean government has announced that a snap presidential election will be held on June 3 to choose a successor to former President Yoon Suk-yeol, with confirmation expected at a cabinet meeting this week.
An official told Yonhap News Agency on Monday that interim President Han Duck-soo intends to confirm the timetable during a cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
"Given the importance of the matter and the issue of setting the election date as a temporary public holiday, the decision will be made at a cabinet meeting," the official added.
A snap election to choose a new president must be held within 60 days after the Constitutional Court removed Yoon from office last Friday over his failed attempt to impose martial law.
If the timetable is confirmed, candidates will be required to register by May 11, and the official campaign period will begin on May 12.
The law also stipulates that any government employee intending to run for president must resign at least 30 days before the election, making May 4 the deadline for submitting their resignation.
The elected president is scheduled to assume office immediately after the election results are announced without a transition team, according to Yonhap.
