Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka was knocked out of the Monte Carlo Open, an ATP Masters 1000 event, after losing his first-round match to Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5, on Monday on the clay courts.
Alejandro Tabilo now advances to a challenging second-round encounter against Serbian Novak Djokovic, the world No. 1 and the tournament's top seed.
In other first-round matches:
Frenchman Gaël Monfils overcame Hungarian Fabian Marozán with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Monfils will face Russian Andrey Rublev in the second round.
American Marcos Giron defeated Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6(5). Giron will proceed to the second round to play against Britain's Jack Draper.
Czech Jiří Lehečka defeated American Sebastian Korda 6-3, 7-6(7). Lehečka will face the winner of the match between Italian Lorenzo Musetti and Chinese Bo Yunchaokete in the second round
