Moscow - (Saba):
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Moscow and Minsk are considering two options for building a new nuclear power plant in Belarus, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral energy cooperation.
Alexei Polishchuk, the CIS official responsible for the country's nuclear program, stated that the first option involves adding a third unit to the existing nuclear power plant in Ostrovets, while the second option involves building a new two-unit plant in Mogilev Oblast.
Polishchuk indicated that a joint working group between the two sides is conducting a comprehensive feasibility study for the project, including technical and financial aspects, reactor type, cost, and implementation timing. The study is expected to be completed by mid-year.
This project comes within the context of continuing cooperation between the two countries in the nuclear energy sector, following the commissioning of the first plant in Ostrovets in 2021, which includes two units with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts.
