Washington - Saba:
The United States plans to impose new tariffs on smartphones, computers, and a number of other electronic devices, in addition to duty-free semiconductors, on imports from China over the next two months.
In press statements on Sunday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick explained that these new tariffs will fall outside the scope of the so-called countervailing tariffs imposed by President Trump, under which duties on Chinese imports rose to 125 percent last week.
The US administration decided last Friday to grant exemptions from tariffs for smartphones and a range of other electronic devices, bringing some relief to tech companies that rely on imports from China.
On Friday, China decided to raise tariffs on US imports from 84% to 125%, in response to Trump's decision to increase tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, further escalating the trade war between the world's two largest economies.
