Washington - Saba:
The US administration has threatened to ban Harvard from accepting international students if the prestigious university does not comply with President Donald Trump's requirement that it be subject to government oversight of student admissions, hiring, and political orientation.
The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement Thursday that "if Harvard cannot demonstrate full compliance with the reporting requirements, the university will lose its privilege of accepting international students."
International students make up more than 27% of Harvard's student body this academic year, according to the university's website.
On Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the cancellation of two DHS grants—totaling approximately $2.7 million—to the university.
"This action follows President Trump's decision to freeze $2.2 billion in federal funding to Harvard University and the proposal to revoke its tax-exempt status due to its espousing of an extremist ideology," Noem said in a statement.
