Moscow – SABA:
Reuters has revealed, citing a high-level source, that the European Union aims to prevent European companies from signing new contracts to purchase Russian energy products.
The report indicates that the European Commission is seeking legal avenues to allow EU companies to breach existing gas supply contracts with Russia, evade penalties for contract termination, and block new agreements for Russian energy supplies.
The EU is exploring mechanisms to legally justify breaking existing gas contracts with Russia, including avoiding fines. This aligns with earlier efforts to reduce dependency, such as the 2022 push to phase out Russian fossil fuels by 2027 (a delayed target).
The proposed roadmap, reportedly slated for announcement on May 6, would bar new energy deals with Russia. This mirrors past challenges, like the 2022 Nord Stream 1 shutdown and subsequent gas price spikes.
