At least nine people were martyred and 30 others injured on Monday in a fire that broke out at a nursing home in Fall River, Massachusetts.
According to the Oman News Agency, local authorities reported that state firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames at the entrance to the building, where 70 residents of the nursing home were trapped. They noted that they were able to enter the building and rescue a large number of residents.
They added that several of the injured were taken to hospitals with varying degrees of seriousness, while five firefighters sustained minor injuries. They noted that investigations are still underway to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
For his part, State Police Chief Jeffrey Bacon described the incident as an "inexplicable tragedy," noting that several residents "were screaming from the windows for help."
