Yemen demands UNESCO to return looted bronze ibex
[01/March/2021]

SANA'A, Feb. 28 (Saba) - Yemen demanded on Sunday UNESCO to help to return a looted Yemeni bronze ibex exhibited in French and Japanese museums by a Qatari prince.

The move made by General Secretariat of the National Commission for UNESCO Ahmed Alrebaie, who sent a letter to Director of UNESCO regional office in Doha Anna Paolini.

In the letter, al-Rebaie called on UNESCO and the International Interpol to play their humanitarian role and to take the required international legal measures against those responsible for smuggling and exhibiting the bronze ibex "Athtar", which has been looted from the "Maryamah" site in Harib area of Marib province.

He demanded to return the ibex to his country of origin, Yemen in accordance with international agreements and laws related to combating the smuggling of antiquities and intellectual property.

Earlier in February, Prince Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani has exhibited the Yemeni bronze ibex "Athtar" in the French Fontainebleau Palace and the museums of Tokyo.
