NEW YORK - SABA : UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has called for a thorough investigation into the recent pager bombings in Lebanon and Syria that occurred on Tuesday.
In his statement, Turk expressed deep concern over the large-scale explosions, which resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people, including two children, and left thousands seriously injured. He described the attacks as shocking and unacceptable, emphasizing the terror and fear they have instilled among civilians.
Turk urged all influential states to take urgent action to prevent further escalation in the region, highlighting the need for leaders to advocate for peace and security. He stressed that protecting civilians must be a top priority and that the region has endured enough suffering.
He criticized the simultaneous targeting of individuals without knowing their identities or circumstances, which he believes breaches international human rights and humanitarian laws. Turk concluded by calling for an independent, transparent investigation into the bombings and demanded accountability for those responsible.
