Five people killed in US state of Missouri due to flooding

Washington - Saba:
At least five people have been killed in the US state of Missouri during the past hours due to strong floods, including two poll workers in the presidential election.

CBS News reported today that the wave of heavy rains that hit the state caused massive floods that flooded streets and homes, as some areas of the state witnessed rainfall of up to 20 centimetres over the past two days.

According to the agency, among the dead were a couple working as polling station employees, where the husband is 70 years old while the wife is 73 years old, and their bodies were found inside a car that was swept away by floods at the Beaver Creek River at about 4:30 am, more than four hours after it was swept away from Manis County.

The floods knocked out power to one of the state's polling centres and made it difficult to reach other polling stations. Dozens of roads in the state were closed, and many voters lined up in the rain to cast their ballots.

Flooding also left some drivers stranded in their cars and disrupted bus service on several routes in the St Louis area.

The US weather service said four or more tornadoes may have hit parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas on Monday, with no reports of deaths or injuries.
