New York - Saba:
The UN Security Council failed on Wednesday evening to adopt a draft resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The draft resolution received the support of 14 of the 15 council members but was not adopted because of the use of veto power by the United States.
The draft resolution calls for all parties to abide by their responsibilities under international law "regarding persons in their custody" and to provide basic services and humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, as well as for the parties to abide by international law and international humanitarian law, in particular with regard to the protection of civilians and their indebted property.
It also calls on the parties to implement UN Resolution 2735 and affirms that "UNRWA remains the backbone of the humanitarian response in Gaza."
