Sana'a - Saba:
The 2024 Wheelchair Basketball Championship for People with Disabilities officially commenced on Friday at the 22 May Club in the capital Sana'a.
Organized by the General Federation for Sports for People with Disabilities, the tournament celebrates the National, Arab, and International Day for People with Disabilities.
The championship features 54 male and female athletes representing various associations, clubs, and centers across the capital Sana'a.
The competition, which runs until December 18, is funded by the Fund for the Care and Rehabilitation of the Disabled and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
During the opening ceremony, Abd Rabbuh Nasser Hamid, Chairman of the Federation, emphasized the importance of the championship in enhancing the skills of athletes and promoting disability sports in Yemen. The ultimate goal is to form a national wheelchair basketball team to compete internationally.
The opening day witnessed exciting matches, with "al-Aqsa Flood" defeating al-Qassam in the men's category and al-Azima edging out al-Amal in the women's category.
The championship is being officiated by a dedicated team of referees and officials to ensure fair play and a successful tournament.
