Serbian Novak Djokovic defeated Australian Rinky Hijikata in straight sets in their first-round match at the Brisbane Tennis Tournament (ATP 250 category) on Tuesday. Djokovic sealed the victory with scores of 6-3, and 6-3, marking a strong start in the singles competition.
In the second round, Djokovic is set to face Frenchman Gaël Monfils, who overcame American Nishesh Basavareddy in a three-set battle, ending 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Elsewhere, Australian Nick Kyrgios suffered defeat against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a thrilling three-set encounter, with scores of 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. Perricard will face fourth-seeded American Frances Tiafoe in the next round. Tiafoe advanced by beating Australian Adam Walton in three sets, 7-6, 6-3.
Meanwhile, seventh-seeded Australian Alexei Popyrin exited the competition early after losing to Italy's Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Arnaldi moves on to face American Reilly Opelka, who defeated Argentina's Federico Agustin Gomez, 7-5, 6-4.
Additionally, Czech player Jakub Mensik advanced to the second round after beating Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin, 7-6, 6-4. Mensik will meet Serbian Dusan Lajovic, who secured his place by defeating Frenchman Arthur Cazaux in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
